Brief:

Johnny2Phones had a sick opportunity to create a song for the 2025 Yankee’s baseball season. I was tasked with ideating and conceptualizing a 2-piece gold grillz for him to show off during the shoot of his music video at Yankee Stadium.

Overview

Last summer, the first grillz brief came in from Johnny2Phones, a contemporary hip-hop artist known for vibrant, bouncy rap music and an obsession with the number “2.” The goal was to explore options up to a 6×6 piece, using the format to push the “2” motif by decking out the jewelry with shiny numerical Easter eggs and saturating the grill with symbols and tokens that represent his identity as a musician.

Dozens of sketches were created, exploring different symbols, layouts, and concepts that laid the groundwork for a later collaboration: a two-piece set for a music video in Yankee Stadium.

Outcome

The design that landed was a 2-piece gold set with a New York Yankee’s logo on the left and a close-up of baseball stitching on the right. There was something badass and unexpected about the baseball. With the stitching zoomed in and made focal, it fell somewhere elusive between a baseball and a sewn-up scar. There is a beautiful juxtaposition between this timeless, classic, and obvious representation of the New York spirit and the roughness, mystery, and ambiguity of the baseball stitching. It all feels so resonate with who Johnny is as an artist. Poppy but unexpected, catchy while pushing boundaries, and classic with a twist.
