Question:

How can Spotify’s music recommendation strategy be reimagined to increase more conscious music discovery?


Answer:
Spotify Unsorted is an extension of the existing app experience that rethinks Spotify’s music recommendation strategy to increase conscious music discovery. Set inside a nostalgic, moody record shop, users can explore music genres in a similar tangible environment as a real store, without any input from algorithms.



Overview


Spotify is known for its advanced algorithm that allows users to receive tailored recommendations to their tastes. While this personalizes the user experience, it also bars users from discovering music that is not directly related to their preferences. 

Existing in the Spotify app as a record store of fantasy and vast possibility, Spotify Unsorted allows users to sift themselves out of their musical echo chambers while sifting through record bins of unique genres. The record store experience allows users to explore new music in an immersive, tangible way that brings the wonder of music discovery back to the data-driven platforms many love.
